We highly recommend all riders have some form of cycling licence, if you aren't interested in racing there are cheaper licences for recreational riding which include insurance and personal accident cover. Check out the Ride licences at http://membership.cycling.org.au/
Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling Club endeavour to be industry leaders in bicycle safety and to do this we require each and every member to lead by example when they’re on the road and to be role models for other cyclists. Collectively, we can achieve a harmonious cycling environment and work towards eradicating all motor vehicle/cyclist accidents. There are a number of key ways we, as cyclists, can make our roads safer:
- Always use a red rear tail light
- Always use a front white light even during the day, after all, it’s compulsory for motorcyclists
- Always follow road rules including two abreast maximums
- Always stay as far left as practical and use bike lanes when available
- Respect all drivers
- Do not yell expletives or throw the finger up at disrespectful drivers. This only escalates the ‘us against them mentality’ and adds fuel to the flame. You would be doing your fellow cyclists an injustice.
- Acknowledge courteous and respectful drivers with a wave and/or a smile
