Shady Acres Spring Series Race 1 - Millbrook

Firstly, well done to all of the cyclists (27) that braved the wintery conditions to take part in the first race of the Shady Acres Spring Series today. Sponsored by Vision Painting & Design, the race started at Millbrook and consisted of 11km laps up toward Gordon, down to Wallace and back. Thank you to Liam and Nick White for setting up, Gerard and Jenni White for organising the hall, Sam Palanca for organising the corner marshals, Sam Smith for chief marshalling and Monica Canny for assisting. We are Tri-Series Champions!

The Tri-Series shield is back in our hands after another awesome team performance by BSCC today in Beeac. The final round saw BSCC take first place in all 4 senior grades and first in the junior handicap race to comfortably win the series.

In A Grade the race was set up for the sprinters and BSCC's Will Key relished the opportunity the best to leave everyone in his wake. It was a different story in B Grade where Dayne Pearce broke away with close to 40kms to go whilst his BSCC teammates rode smart to ensure he stayed away for a solo victory. In C Grade there were a few attacks during the race which took some time to close down eventually leading to a bunch sprint where BSCC's Pete Canny led out teammate Dean Griffin for the win. The D Grade race saw a total domination from BSCC. James Knipe, Jeremy Humber and Mark O'Callaghan controlled things at the front of the race before finishing 1, 2 and 3.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the series. The team-based racing has been a lot of fun and it proved that our club has got great depth throughout all grades. It's certainly an exciting time to be a BSCC member!

BSCC Dominates Tri-Series Round 2

It was a fantastic collective effort from all BSCC riders in what turned out to be a total domination in Round 2 of the Tri-Series in Dereel. Every BSCC rider played their part in the success which gained our club a huge points advantage over Geelong and Colac Cycling Clubs. Well done to everyone. Tri-Series Round 1

Despite a mix up with the starting time (which Geelong later apologised for) and a few BSCC riders missing the start our club performed well in the first round of the Tri-Series in Meredith today. Congratulations to everyone who competed today especially those in B Grade where it was a great team performance. Here are the BSCC results:

Addington Heights Scratch Race - C Grade Race Report

C Grade Race Report - Thanks to Dean Wells

With the aim to create a more level playing field, an extra grade was slotted into the program for the new Addington Heights circuit. Along with the fair north wind on the circuit, the grading ensured that the race would be a tactical affair rather than a benefit fund for stronger riders.
The 12 riders had predominantly raced against each other in B Grade throughout the season, so the grading meant little as most of them were familiar with the ability of each other...

With a stiff breeze at their backs, the first few kilometres was always going to be a fast affair, albeit no one was under pressure.
Turning west at the pig farm the bunch was soon put into the gutter by Lindsay Burgoyne and Shannon Meadows as they left just enough space for those willing to work.
The pace went out of the race as the bunch turned out of Hendersons Rd and started the long drag towards Weatherboard. Only a few riders spent significant time on the front into the headwind - Meadows, Matthew Sheehan and Ben Fahy doing the bulk of the work.
Up the rise and Dean Wells rode off the front by himself, no one else wanting to go out and play, or commit so early in the race. Wells’ lead extended out to a couple of hundred metres down the Avenue, but he sat up and the bunch had regrouped as they turned out of Hendersons Rd into the headwind again.

The next lap was almost a carbon copy of the first with Meadows, Sheehan and Fahy braving the headwind and Wells again riding off the front at the top of Weatherboard.
Once again the bunch regrouped at the turn out of Hendersons Rd. Meadows, Sheehan and Fahy once again assuming responsibility into the headwind, then through the chicane Tony Mirabella helped increase the pace on the Weatherboard climb.

This lap the bunch turned left onto Edmonston Rd and continued a long gradual climb into the headwind.
Fahy increased the pace on the downhill section to Harrisons Rd as riders started to jockey for position. The race had finally begun...

The fast turn into Harrisons Rd, combined with the crosswind soon stretched the group as they started the climb. Tim Paton and Peter Canny struggled at the back as Fahy led the fast charge up the hill with Mirabella. A group formed at the front as other nimble riders rode past those that were struggling with the pace of the ascent. Meadows, Josh Cannon, Simon Ellis and Shane Hayes all joined the front group which was now six riders strong - they had a fifty metre advantage over the highpoint of the race.
A chase group consisting of Burgoyne, Sheehan, Wells and David Hearne formed behind as they crested the climb, but by now the leaders had a one hundred metre gap and they were pressing the advantage.

Onto Langi Kal Kal Rd and the chase bunch started to gain on the leaders, but their relentless chase had dropped Hearne. The lead group had also lost a rider, with Meadows unable to cope with the surging after his earlier efforts into the wind.
The gap was less than fifty metres again when under the urging of Ellis the leaders started working as a more cohesive unit. With the finish line still some 15 kilometres away, now was not the time to play games with each other!

Meadows joined the chase group before Addington but the leaders had commenced track turns up the Edmonston Rd climb and again pulled away from the chasers.
Onto the Avenue again and it was full gas by all parties (check out Strava for the efforts on this segment…). The lead gradually grew out to a few hundred metres as the race turned back onto Hendersons Rd and headed towards the home turn at the pig farm.
The chase bunch realised their efforts were for nought and eased off, content to ride in together.

Tactics came to the fore as the leaders swept into the stiff headwind on the three kilometre long run to the finish line.
With 700 metres to go, Fahy attacked down the final decline towards the dry bed of Lake Learmonth. Hayes pulled himself inside out to chase Fahy down. Eventually he closed the gap but he had also taken Mirabella and Cannon with him.
These two sprinted for the victory with old hand Mirabella prevailing over young buck Cannon.
Fahy hung on for third from Hayes with Ellis in behind. In the end the leaders were over a minute clear on the chase bunch.

It should be noted that Simon Ellis didn’t leave everything out on the road. Recovering from a virus, Simon had enough left in the tank to engage in a minute long bout of post race vomiting. That’s either guts to be out racing…or nuts!

Congratulations to everyone who toughed it out on the inaugural Addington Heights scratch race today sponsored by The Western Hotel. The new course certainly tested everyone legs out and the strong wind didn't make it any easier. From all reports though, everyone enjoyed today's racing. Thanks again to the Eureka Veterans for allowing us to use their clubrooms - it was very much appreciated. Thank you to Pete Canny for setting up, Cyclescape for sponsoring the Winter Series tail car and Sovereign Park Motor Inn the lead car.

Reverse Cashin Scratch Race - C Grade Race Report

C Grade Race Report - Thanks to Don Stewart

Racing today was a 70km Scratch race round a modified Mt Misery and Avenue Circuit at Burrumbeet. The course today took us Clockwise round 2 10km laps of the Avenue and a 50km lap of Mt Misery. Weather on the way out to Burrumbeet was very foggy with a North to North-westerly wind at 28kmph. But sunshine greeted us at Burrumbeet and turned into a perfect day for racing.

C Grade was the biggest group with 12 , Dave Marriott returning to racing after a lapse of a few years. Karla McKinnon coming back after injury joined the group as did guest rider Jason Fadel ( St Kilda ). Story there is, Jason was invited up to Ballarat by Steve ‘Kanga “ Kennedy who had entered but did not turn up himself. Either, thought better of the windy weather, had too big a night celebrating the Cats win or a better offer to stay in bed ?? Will need to see his teacher’s note next week !!

The group was made up of regular riders in Paul Pickersgill , John Maguire and Pat Cashin ( podium placegetters from Snake Valley ) , Justin Foster , Darren Gladman and Warwick James ( making their way up through the rankings ), second race member Peter Fitzgerald and the 2 senior riders of Shane( Mr Finance ) Butler and Don ( assistant Handicapper ) Stewart.

The race started off at a leisurely pace with most riders rotating turns into the head wind up to the bottom of the Weatherboard Road rise.

Cashin, seen for the first time , pushed it up over the crest, then Fitzgerarld shifted the pace up another gear down to the Anzac monument and ably assisted by Marriot and Butler. Again the pace slowed into the head wind to Weatherboard. By the Avenue the second time Butler got a bit fed up of the slower pace and cranked it up til the right hand turn. Butler more known for his climbing ability than his sprinting was out to hurt the sprinters legs as much as possible. The group stayed together with a few taking turns.

Heading out Ercildoune road, again the pace slowed as riders realised we were on the dreaded Mt Misery lap with many conserving their energy for the long climb. Butler again became impatient and started a bit of gutter action , with the group strung along the edge of the road and only the very experienced able to get a sit. After that little flurry Fitzgerarld and Marriot decided to settle the tempo and ride up the road. So for the next 15 km it turned into a very leisurely recreational ride with Butler , Fitzgerald, Mc Kinnon, Cashin and Pickersgill doing a few longer turns.

Surprisingly, there were no real attacks up the first rise from Black Bottom Road , although Cashin as ever was twitching to up the ante. Pickersgill again going with him and bringing the group back. There were a few pushes up the hill but the pace was very much tempo until Cashin could contain himself no longer and made the first real break of the day about 1 km from the top. He made the crest with a 200m advantage and gradually increased that on the downhill. The group looked around and decided there was enough fire power to let Cashin have a while out the front by himself.

He really was working hard and kept the bunch at bay for 14.5 km ( garmin accuracy ) even although we were now having to get serious and crank up the pace with some long rotating turns. Cashin was eventually reeled in half down the Avenue with 4 km to go ( so ride of the day goes to Pat ).

The pace did settle a bit into the crosswind with some gutter action again leading to McKinnon doing a bit of cross country cyclocross to stay with in contention. Pickersgill , Fitzgerald and Fadel stayed at the pointy end to enter the Finish straight ahead of the pack. From there the pace did not slacken with riders trying to pick the wheel for the sprint. Maguire ran out of gears ( being Junior ) as did a couple of others.

Pickersgill and Fitzgerald opened up the Sprint early with Marriot and Fadel up the road and Stewart down the road. With 100m to the line Stewart hit the lead but it was short lived as Marriot followed by Fadel ( St Kilda Crit specialist ) hit the after burners and took out 1st and 2nd place by a couple of bike lengths with Stewart hanging on for 3rd from the rest of the bunch.

My son said as I left the house to head out to the race. “ Enjoy yourself “ . I said , “ I don’t think Enjoy is the right word “ !!! But in the end he was right , a very enjoyable days racing. Thanks to the whole group for putting in a great effort on a great day for racing.

Reverse Cashin Scratch Race

Well done to everyone who competed in today's Reverse Cashin scratch race sponsored by Unblemished Skin & Laser Clinic. This new course had a bit of everything in it and certainly made you think a bit. Conditions were fantastic with the strong northerly wind ensuring a fast and exciting final few kilometres.
