Calling all road and track cyclists: Can you spare five minutes? We want to know about your experience of criterium racing in Ballarat, and what you would like it to be! BSCC is running a survey of members and riders as part of a study on options for upgraded criterium facilities in Ballarat. Have your say before Tuesday 14 June: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LGDYWRM
Dear all road cyclists,
Ballarat and the region are currently experiencing a terrific growth in cyclist numbers. The increases can be credited to numerous factors such as junior and educational programs, the National Road Championships, marketing activities or perhaps it's just the community's friendly cycling culture. Recently, cyclist safety and its associated issues have been in the media more than ever before. Many of them have stemmed from the tragic hit run event on Good Friday. Not long after that event, there were reports stating that cycling road accidents have increased by 50% in the last year. Meanwhile, the Amy Gillet Foundation are pushing their way into parliament to ask for the one meter rule to be enforced in Victoria following its introduction into other states. As a cycling club, all of this talk about cyclist safety is great. The more awareness there is the better. However, we can’t just rely on media to make our roads safer for cyclists, there are a number of key ways we, as cyclists, can make our roads safer:
See you out there! Regards, Road Racing Committee Dear Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling Club members,
As you will be aware, our club has experienced increasing growth in membership and activity. Recently we've been able to work to achieve facility upgrades that our mountain bikers and BMX members are enjoying. Now, it's time to look at the needs of our growing road cyclist membership. We have recently been successful in receiving $14,000 from the City of Ballarat to run a feasibility study investigating future options for a safe criterium track. This is an exciting opportunity for our club. We have appointed local firm Urbanscale to run the project, which will look at the needs of club members and available opportunities to help identify and assess viable options that achieve our objectives. Urbanscale has extensive experience in regional strategy and planning, having achieved some great results in an array of social infrastructure studies around Victoria. They also know a fair bit about cycling. You can find out more about them at www.urbanscale.com.au. As part of this project, the club committee and Urbanscale will shortly be seeking your views on a range of issues including local needs for road cycling. From here, we will continue to work with you to develop options and present a viable project to Council and other potential funding bodies. We look forward to providing further information on this process shortly. These are exciting times for our club and we look forward to working with you, our members, on this project. Regards, BSCC Committee |
