Rhys is the 2009 BSCC TT championSeptember 17 2009Chris Liston writes (here and in the Courier): Gillett Stamps Authority on Senior Time Trial Rhys Gillett stamped his authority on the Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling Club’s 19 km senior individual time trial championship on Sunday. Gillett rode the course at an average of 43 km/h to hold off time trial specialists Andrew Weightman and Will Wettenhall, the latter who returned from Melbourne for the event. Weightman claimed the masters time trial title, to add to his senior road race bronze medal from the day before. Stuart Grigg and Kylie Zelley also claimed medals two days in a row. Zelley won the masters women’s TT event , and Grigg backed up his masters 1-3 road race win with 2nd in the masters time trial. Tim Oliver powered home to take bronze in the masters 1-3 classification. After Saturday’s gale-force winds, riders described Sunday’s cool, still conditions as superb. The 19 km time trial course covered the Haddon-Windermere Road, Cuthberts Road, Dyson Drive, and the Old Western Highway, starting and finishing at Windermere. The event brought to a close the BSCC 2009 road championship series, except for the W15 (under-15 girls') event, postponed for a week because the two favorites are competing at the junior national championships in Canberra. Results BSCC 2009 Junior Individual Road Time Trial Championships Kate Lyons turned the table on her friend and rival Olivia Oliver to claim the W11 BSCC individual road time trial championship over 4 km. Lyons reversed the road race placings by 25 seconds. Beatrice Pickersgill took third and posted a faster time than her season-long adversary, Rochelle Liston. The closest result of the Sunday morning time trial championship series was from Dylan Bilston, who made amends for Nick White’s dashing sprint win in the road race on Saturday. Bilston made up four seconds on White to take the 4km M11 championship in 7:36.57. Dylan Bilston’s sister Emma claimed back to back titles by taking the under-13 girls (W13) time trial championship from Emily Oliver. Harriet Pickersgill finished the championship weekend with double bronze. Angus Lyons was in form for the weekend and took the M15 8 km time trial in 13:46.3, from Joshua Liston and Craig Firman. Molly Hegert reversed the fortunes of the previous day, punishing Meg O’Doherty with a blistering 16:42.22 over the 8 km W15 championship. The time trials were run with the top seeds riding first – the opposite of Tour de France time trials – to allow those who are normally chased in handicaps to ride their own race, and to deny the fastest riders their usual “rabbits.” So top gun Ciaran Conaughton went off first in the M17 8 km championship. He rode a scorching 37 km/h average to record 12:50 for 8 km and take the championship. Liam White consolidated a good year on the bike with a strong 2nd place, and Andrew Pearson edged out Killian Plastow for third and the bronze medal.
